Urinalysis

Urinalysis is a diagnostic test that reports the physical and chemical properties of a pet's urine. This diagnostic test is primarily used to rule in or out infections and other diseases that can be harmful to your pet.

If you bring your pet to Stand For Animals and it is determined that a urinalysis is necessary, we can collect a urine sample by free catch (have them urinate into a sterile tray) or directly by inserting a sterile needle into their bladder.

During a urinalysis we check the following things:

  1. Assess the color (clear, cloudy, bloody, etc.).
  2. Measure the concentration of the urine.
  3. Measure the pH (acidic vs neutral vs alkaline).
  4. Microscopic examination to check for abnormal cells, crystals, etc.

If you notice your pet is drinking more water than normal, is peeing more frequently, seems to be in pain when they urinate, or you can see blood in their urine, then a urinalysis may be appropriate. If you are concerned about your pet’s urinary health, schedule a sick office visit with us to discuss with one of our experienced veterinarians.
