Feline Distemper (FVRCP)

The Feline Distemper vaccine is often referred to as an FVRCP. This acronym stands for Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calici virus, and Panleukopenia (FVRCP) vaccine. The vaccine protects cats against the three deadly, airborne viruses in the acronym, all of which are dangerous to cats.

Panleukopenia is the most commonly known virus because its other name is Distemper. Almost all cats are exposed to Panleukopenia (Distemper) in their life. Kittens, before they are vaccinated, are particularly at risk of dying from the virus if contracted.

If you have a kitten, they will receive a series of this vaccine up to 14-16 weeks of age that will protect them for one year. After that one year, they will receive a 3-year vaccine. If you have an adult cat that has never been vaccinated, they will receive a series of two vaccines 3-4 weeks apart that will last for one year and then a 3-year vaccine after that.

Vaccine Reactions

A small percentage of dogs and cats (like humans) can have an allergic reaction to vaccines. At the time of your appointment, you will be reminded about the signs that you need to watch for in case of a reaction.
